Eaglemont is the high pocket between Ivanhoe and Heidelberg. Mount Eagle and Glenard were laid out by Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony Griffin as garden suburbs: streets that follow the contours, internal reserves instead of a rigid grid, and big gardens meant to stay open to each other. A century on, that canopy is huge, and a lot of it hangs within jumping distance of the tiles.
We've been working roofs across Banyule for years. Up here the pattern is familiar: a branch to the gutter, a gap at a valley or an old extension join, and a warm void behind it. We find the route in use, fit a one-way door, and proof the opening so it can't be reused.
Griffin streets under a mature canopy
Walk Summit Drive, Outlook Drive, The Eyrie or Glenard Drive and you feel it immediately: the roads bend with the hill, and the trees are old enough to meet the eaves. Where a limb sits within about a metre and a half of the gutter, possums treat it like a ramp. They barely need the ground.
Communal reserves and open back gardens
The Mount Eagle and Glenard layouts left pocket reserves and encouraged unfenced rear gardens so kids could move between houses. That same openness is a wildlife corridor now. Possums travel through the internal parks and across neighbouring blocks before they ever hit Lower Heidelberg Road.
Yarra Flats on the doorstep
Drop toward The Boulevard and the Main Yarra Trail and you're into Yarra Flats Park. That river corridor feeds wildlife straight into the south-eastern edge of the suburb. Homes on that side see a lot of night traffic, especially where the garden canopy links the parkland to the roof.
Tiled roofs, deep eaves and later joins
Plenty of early twentieth-century and Griffin-era homes here, plus extensions tucked into the slope. The usual weak points are the same ones we see on period roofs across Banyule: shifted tiles, weathered fascia, chimney flashing, and the junction where a newer wing meets the original roof. Those joins look finished from the street and still leave a gap a possum can use.
Ridge blocks that hide the rear roof
From the street a house can look single-storey and straightforward. Walk around the back toward the valley and the roof drops away. Rear gutters, lower additions and upper eaves on the downhill side are easy to miss if you only inspect the front elevation. We check the steep side properly before we call the job done.
