Identify your pest

How do you know if it's a possum?

It can be difficult to tell the difference between a possum problem and a rodent infestation. And it's critical to know, because rodent poison can be lethal to possums.

Sign Possum Rodent
Noise Heavy thumping Fast scratching / gnawing
Location Roof only Roof + wall cavities
Timing Night / dusk-dawn On-and-off all day
Droppings Large, obvious Small, scattered
Size Cat-sized (1-4kg) Mouse to small rat

Turns out it's rats or mice? We handle rodent control too.

Understanding possum behaviour

Possums are nocturnal, arboreal marsupials known for their adaptability to urban environments. Our most common species are the Brushtail and Ringtail Possum. Often territorial, possums seek shelter in roof spaces, attics, or trees, and are primarily active at night.

They're known for living close to humans, which sometimes leads to significant noise disturbance, bad odours, stains on ceilings, and damage to roofs and electrical wiring.

Possums are protected by law in Victoria, so humane removal methods such as our one-way exits are essential for removing them safely and effectively.

Nocturnal

Active from dusk to dawn. You'll hear them most between 9pm and 4am.

Protected by law

It is illegal to harm, trap, or relocate possums in Victoria. Fines apply.

Territorial

They'll come back to the same roof unless every entry point is sealed. That's why proofing matters.

“Inspected the place with a fine tooth comb and blocked all entrance points after spending considerable time checking perimeter of the place. On time, real easy to work with and super efficient in addressing the problem. Couldn't recommend more highly.”

FAQ

Common questions about possum removal

Everything you need to know before booking.

We install one-way exit doors at the possum's entry point after sealing all other possible entries. The possum leaves naturally when they go out to forage (usually the first night), and the door prevents them from getting back in. Once we're certain they've left, we come back to remove the door and seal that final entry point. It's proven, humane, and effective.

Not at all. We use one-way exit doors, which is the most humane method approved by wildlife authorities. The possum simply walks out on their own terms. No traps, no cages, no stress. We donate $20 from every job to Wildlife Victoria because we genuinely care about native wildlife.

We seal every single entry point using premium, weatherproof materials. Our team has trade experience in carpentry and construction, so we don't just patch holes, we fix them properly. That's why we can offer a 2.5 year warranty (the longest in Australia). If the possum gets back in, we come back and fix it at no extra cost.

Possums usually leave on the first night after we install the one-way exit. Occasionally they'll leave on the second night. Once they're out, we return to do a final inspection, remove the exit door, and seal everything up. Start to finish is usually 2-3 weeks.

They'll usually hang around your property for a little while before finding a new home in a nearby tree or another roof. We recommend installing a possum box in one of your trees. It sounds counterintuitive, but giving them an alternative home means they're far less likely to try and re-enter your roof.

Absolutely. We don't use any poisons or chemicals for possum work. It's completely mechanical: one-way doors and physical sealing. Zero risk to pets, kids, or the possums themselves.

Possums are heavier. You'll hear thumping and heavy footsteps at night. Rats make lighter, faster scratching sounds and are active on and off all day. If you're not sure, try our online Possum Checker or book online and we'll work it out.
